Austrians are very generous hosts. If you are invited into their home, you will be so well taken care of, you won’t want to leave.
On Friday my husband and I were invited over for a dinner party. Our host, Thomas, noticed that one of his guests only had a few more sips in her wine glass. He called out to her, “Come on, drink up so I can get you a refill.” The woman hastily threw back her glass and gulped down the last sips, much to Thomas’ satisfaction. He jumped up seconds after the glass left her lips and hurried off to the kitchen to get the promised refill.
Now that’s service.

I was offered white wine on a job interview??!! Was it a test to see if I am an alcoholic or was it just being nice?
Hey Chanda – did you take the job? Sounds like a cool company! =)
I did and I start next Thursday. I would have taken pretty much anything just to have a job (ok not anything, I rule out cleaning and food service). They are being very understanding about my paperwork process for permanent residency and work permit. Now I just need to find the perfect place to live. I have been searching everyday. I am leaning towards 2, 3 or 22. Any Advice? We are staying with family on the northern edge of 22 so I am familiar with it out here.
Hi Chanda,
Congrats on getting the job.
We’re thinking of moving too. We’re looking toward the 4, 6, 8, 9, districts. Right now we are really far out (12, 23, 13 border) and want to be closer to the inner city. That’s what I would suggest. Get as close as you can. Unfortunately, I am no expert on all the districts and such.
“you won’t want to leave” – have you noticed how long it takes to leave a party or even a small meeting? the Viennese take forever to say goodbye, saying it multiple times, getting back into conversation, saying goodbye again.
i’ve adjusted by starting to say good bye about a half hour before i actually plan on leaving. sometimes even that is not enough…
Hi Chanda,
the Austrians are very frequent drinkers, but on a job interview (if it takes place in office environment) that’s very rare. never happened to me and I would never offer alcoholic beverages myself if I conduct an interview. I guess that this was in a different surrounding (like in a cafe in the later afternoon or similar).
Regarding accommodation: The inner districts are more expensive. 22. especially when close to U1 is also fine, you find expats there as well because of the UN and the Vie Int school.
Hurray Hannes! Help each other out! That’s great!
